$500 Goal

The Homeschool Hub of Franklin County, VA officially became a 501(c)(3) in April 2025 after seeing a need for our area families to educate their children outside the traditional public school model for many reasons. Our goal is to connect families with the community in order to give homeschooled children the opportunity to interact with and learn about our unique area! When children are deeply involved in their community, they grow up to be valued members of society, with aspirations and attainable goals for their future roles!

The Hub as the center of a wheel, with spokes connecting different people and organizations, is our driving concept. We offer many free social resources - holiday themed parties, park gatherings, some field trips - but also have a low-cost membership option that gives families first priority for field trip and class registration and covers our liability insurance policy. This was our first big goal as a non-profit, in order to provide maximum protection to our families and the organizations who kindly host us. Our goal of 40 family memberships was reached and exceeded within the first 2 months of offering this model, and we currently stand at 46 member families, however our reach extends much farther! We have been approached with the possibility of opening a Bedford County chapter, though families from all surrounding counties are welcome to join us.

We have BIG plans for 2026! We plan to facilitate high school chemistry and biology classes, a middle/high writing class, and several interest-based classes (previously these have included sewing at Fork Mountain Quilting and canning at Callaway Cannery). We have a very experienced member who plans to bring indispensable agriculture lessons to our ever-growing enrollment. We have recently visited Star Flight Training in Roanoke and filled three field trips of 40-50 each to the Titan Trains manufacturing facility in Boone's Mill, where a large emphasis was placed on Franklin County/Virginia craftsmanship. We are also hosting the area's first homeschool formal dance at the Burwell-Holland Homeplace in May. The social aspect of raising teens is incredibly important, and we want them to be able to experience some of the same events as their peers in traditional school. We helped Ferrum College begin their annual homeschool graduation ceremony (now in its second year), and will host our Third Annual Curriculum Show and Sale at Redwood UMC in Rocky Mount in June as an opportunity for families to buy and sell resources, participate as vendors, and attend a transcript workshop and career exploration seminar.

It is very important to note that our goal as homeschoolers is to integrate with our society while meeting our kids' various needs in an individualized way. With over 1,000 homeschoolers in Franklin County and 3,000 in all surrounding counties, the growth of non-traditional schooling is not slowing down. Rather than isolate, the Homeschool Hub of Franklin County, VA seeks to make connections and strengthen our incredible community by sharing our ideas and resources. Please join us in extending that welcome to all our area's children!
