Mission Statement

Our mission and goal at the Bedford Humane Society is the elimination of pet overpopulation and suffering in the town and county of Bedford Virginia, as well as the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect.  We strive to achieve these goals through our programs, pet adoptions and through advocacy and humane education.

Message from Bedford Humane Society, Inc

Here at BHS, our goal is to build families and create a community where no companion animal is born unwanted and where they are all happy, healthy and loved.  Currently we are a completely foster-based organization, but are in the process of planning and fundraising to build Bedford County’s first no-kill shelter on our property on Ole Turnpike Drive in the town of Bedford.  This project is very near and dear to our hearts at BHS because this adoption center would not only house and care for multiple cats and dogs until they find their forever homes, but it would also provide a place for potential adopters to meet and greet the animals in our care.  We believe this would better showcase our rescues, which in turn would decrease the turnaround time for adoptions, allowing us to rescue more animals than ever before.  Please consider donating to our “Building Fund” to help save so many homeless animals.

Overview of Services

1. Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program BHS subsidizes the cost of surgery for cats and dogs to pet owners who qualify under specific income guidelines. The goal of the program is to reduce, over time, the number of dogs and cats that find their way into shelters or foster care. Angels of Assisi Veterinary Clinic is our partner in this program. 2. Animeals This program is designed to help families feed their companion animals when they are experiencing financial hardship. We want families to be able to keep their furry family members. This program is supported by generous donations from people and businesses in the Bedford, Virginia community. 3. Forgotten Felines This program involves the capture, spay or neuter, rabies vaccination, and mite treatment, then release of feral and free-roaming cats in and around the Bedford area. Our partner vets provide these services at a discount.
