Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Scholarship Trust Inc

SML Lions Club conceived a scholarship trust in 1990, incorporated and granted 501 (c) (3) status by the IRS in 1991.  The trust awarded a $4,000 scholarship to a graduating Franklin County High School Senior accepted to a Virginia four-year college in 1992. Donations to the trust are invested in perpetuity with proceeds used to fund Virginia college scholarships, now $9,000 for students enrolling directly in a four-year program and $4,500 for students planning to transfer after initial studies at junior college.  (This a great way for a student to get a solid start and save money.)   Over 150 students have benefitted and, as of 2022, 95% have graduated.  Initially limited to Franklin County High School graduates, in 2027, scholarships will be offered to Staunton River High School graduates.
