Mission Statement
Developing good neighbors skills and values in children through programs that nourish, educate and support them while providing life-changing experiences for college students through leadership development internships.
A message from SML Good Neighbors, Inc.
Together, we have provided thousands of hours of educational programming to fight the summer slide and close the achievement gap for thousands of students in our community. Together, we have provided tens of thousands of meals to children and families who are food insecure. Together, we are making a difference in building up tomorrow's leaders.
Overview of Services
Our organization started with a handful of caring and concerned citizens just like you. In 2006, this group began researching the needs of the children in our community and realized there were some pretty large gaps that needed attention. The founding members sprung into action, enlisting the support of our community to build programs from the ground up!
Our first summer enrichment day camp took place in 2008, serving 65 students. 15 years later, SML Good Neighbors serves over 400 students from 21 different zip codes each year through our various programs, operating in two counties. Good Neighbors has provided vocational exploration and leadership internships for over 80 carefully selected college students from around the world.
Through our programs we provide nutritional, educational and enrichment support to at risk youth and leadership development for college students. In a typical year, SML Good Neighbors provides over 140 hours of educational and enrichment programing to over 400 students, 320 hours of leadership development, over 17,000 meals through daily breakfasts and lunches at summer programs and weekend food bags, and scholarships through the Nancy Horton Scholarship program. SML Good Neighbors also provides access to hundreds of books and gives away over a thousand each summer.
